Known background story:
While being kind of well-known for being an outstanding writer of fine science-fiction novels, as well as being considered as the one who always finds the right words to express things that lacked words before, when it comes to actual conversation and dealing with humans Will is not a man of many words (or talents).
If there was someone to know him very well, they most likely would describe Will as 'A man who eagerly tries to sabotage himself.'

He is known to be born by the name of Willard Callaghan, a USAF-man fighting in WWII, and a – more or less – lucky person to not only survive crashing his bomber but also surviving prison camp. However, regardless of his good reputation and achievements, as soon as he was freed and sent home, Will treated himself and his own past with nothing but contempt.
Disgusted by war, violence and basically every single state he had to deal with in the past, his ambitions took a U-turn and Will decided to make himself useful in a way that did not entirely fill him with disgust:
Instead of grieving over a traumatic past he started focusing on the future. To be more specific: Ideas of how a potentially better future might look like one day.
He became an author.
Writing entertaining educational novels for children at first, he slowly but surely became ore and more obsessed with science fiction.
Will managed to recruit a loyal fan base for his 'Transhuman (R)Evolution' series, which – even 10 years later – is still considered some sort of insider cult classic.
His breakthrough however happened in 1953 with Will's Hugo Award winning series 'Amongst Causality', which was considered to be one of his most remarkable works, not just for his ability to explain matters of advanced quantum physics to a wide audience, but also for his memorable independent female protagonist, as well as his positive portrayal of a potential society based on values of pure objectivism – Which was exactly the reason that got him on the list of people to be potentially invited to join Rapture. He was considered useful, for the first time in his life.
Will's reaction to this sort of invitation happened to be surprisingly cool and relaxed, accepting it with a shrug and a keen 'I've got nothing to lose anyway, aye?'.
So he changed his environment – once again -, simply willing to participate in this social experiment because of a mixture of curiosity and hunger for challenge.
He kept his profession, and continued his writing career, usually with medium success.
Publishing his new works 'The Space Ark' and 'Status Quo' however managed to guarantee him enough income to live a convenient life and satisfy his curiosity for tonics and plasmids.

However, even though technically possessing a safe home and acceptable materialistic wealth, Will's story does not exactly have a happy ending.
He still struggles with himself, his traumatic past and it's physiological effects.
Being considered as bipolar and partially self-destructive, as well as indicating a serious identity crisis, Will has the habit of acting overly happy and even goofy in public, yet proofs to be an unstable and depressed nature in private, who possesses a way too big love for anything with alcohol...
He successfully manages to keep his damaged and sick side to himself so far, however claims himself that most of the time in public, he feels as if about to collapse any minute.
He desperately strives to forget about his past, and basically about himself as well, yet finds himself unable to do so, regardless of how much alcohol he drinks in hope to kill his own brain cells.
Torn between trying to sabotage his own brain and be as useful as possible to others, most of the time Will does not even know what he is about to do himself. He just goes with the flow, and mostly - surprisingly - survives.

Known family/friends/associates:
He does not have any sort of family.
Furthermore does he claim to not even be able to sustain any sort of relationships. He calls himself a 'social failure', unable to stay with someone for more than a couple of days or one-night-stands, and while he himself hates his own inability to trust someone and stick with them, he still somewhat learned to accept this fate.
For :iconsketchitydoodles:, who asked me about his character.

Isn't he a 'classy' gentleman?
Yeah, Will is a pretty old OC - I think even my first (serious) one for the Bioshock universe. Still love him though. ^^
